Discover the Medieval town of Assisi, built largely in pink stone. Tucked enticingly on the slopes of Mount Subasio, it boasts a considerable legacy of St Francis, who was born here in 1181. See the most significant sites of his life from his birth, Christening, conversion and burial place.
After lunch in a typical trattoria, your tour will continue to the town of Gubbio, the former capital of Umbria. Gubbio's compact centre has a selection of medieval, Gothic and Renaissance structures built out of grey limestone with lovely views over the beautiful countryside. Visit the Roman Amphitheatre, the imposing Palazzo dei Consoli and its gallery and adjoining Piazza Grande and then take an exciting funicular ride to Mount Ingino above the town for more views in this entertaining and interesting experience.
Additional Histories:
Assisi holds significant sites associated with the life of Saint Francis, including his birth (the Chiesa Nuova containing the fragments of his home, and the charming Oratory of San Francesco Piccolino), and his Christening (the baptismal Font is still in the Cathedral of San Rufino). Visit the streets and squares of Francis’s youth, the moment of his true conversion (the crucifix that spoke to him in San Damiano), and the Renunciation of all his worldly possessions (by the church of Santa Maria Maggiore). The focal point of course is the magnificent Basilica of Saint Francis, his burial place, filled with innovative and beautiful frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue, Simone Martini and others.
