This excursion features a journey from Dublin through the Boyne Valley and historical sites, including the Neolithic site of Newgrange. The experience highlights a route through castles, market towns, and a walled town, reaching as far back as sixth-century carved crosses and Neolithic burial mounds. The atmosphere connects historical valley monuments on the banks of the Boyne River with a return journey through coastal and inland villages to an estate castle.
The journey begins with a drive from Dublin City to Trim Castle, a twelfth-century site on the banks of the Boyne River that contains the remains of Ireland’s largest Anglo-Norman castle. The route then travels through the market town of Navan, east to the village of Slane and Slane Castle, and crosses the Boyne River to arrive at the Boyne Valley Heritage Centre. From there, visitors continue to Newgrange for a tour of its Neolithic Burial Mounds before departing for the walled town of Drogheda and the ancient carved crosses of Monasterboice, which date back to the sixth century. The return trip travels through the villages of Balbriggan, the seaside town of Skerries, and the villages of Lusk and Swords to reach Malahide Castle, where a tour of the castle and grounds alongside light refreshments is possible if time allows. The tour concludes with a drive along the coast road through Portmarnock and the hill of Howth back to Dublin port.
